Hobart uses big second half to down Brewers

September 27, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Five different players netted goals to lead Hobart College to a 5-2 victory over Vassar College in UCAA men’s soccer action this afternoon on Cozzens Field. Beating Rensselaer by the same score the day before, the Statesmen have tallied five goals in each of their previous three contests.

Junior Ramez Ghaly (Christian Brothers/Syracuse, N.Y.) gave Hobart (6-3, 2-0 UCAA) the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute with a blast over the Brewers keeper from 25 yards out. Less than four minutes later Vassar (4-2, 0-2 UCAA) evened the score when an unmarked junior Aldis Butler (San Francisco University/Larkspur, Calif.) headed in a cross from Roberto Wortman (Trevor Day School/New York, N.Y.). Butler struck again in the 34th minute of action converting a penalty kick for the 2-1 lead.

The Statesmen responded seven minutes later as sophomore Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) ripped a shot on the ground past keeper Paul Connors (Beaver Country Day School/North Andover, Mass.) for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.

Knotted at two going into the second half, the two teams played even soccer in the opening 25 minutes of the stanza, but an unassisted goal in the 71st minute by Eduardo Ponce de Leon (Northfield-Mt. Hermon/Puebla, Mexico) opened the flood gates for Hobart. Junior Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) and sophomore John Rosenbaum (Ostra Reals Gymnasium/Solna, Sweden) would add scores two and three minutes later, respectively, putting the game out of Vassar’s grasp.

First-year keeper Carl Fried (Nacka Gymnasium/Alta, Sweden) had one save in 77 minutes of action, while Connors went the distance making four stops for the Brewers.

The Statesmen return to action on Sept. 30, when they host University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
