Hobart defeats Tigers in overtime

September 18, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, Conn.) scored two goals to lead the Hobart College soccer team to a 3-2 overtime victory over the RIT Tigers. This was the second game for the Statesmen in as many days.

Hobart came out attacking early in the first half hoping to bury the Tigers early. Rookie Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) nearly put the Statesmen up by a goal in the 24th minute, but was denied by the post. Just a few minutes later, RIT senior forward Rick Anthony (Baker/Baldwinsville, N.Y.) put the Tigers in the lead with a well-struck ball into the upper-ninety. The Statesmen went into the half down 1-0, unable to finish on any of their five shots. Seven minutes into the second period, Abroms used some nifty footwork to elude a couple of defenders before putting the ball past the RIT keeper. In the 61st minute, Nuno Montiero (Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal) capitalized on a defensive mistake by Hobart to take the 2-1 lead. The Statesmen refused to give up as sophomore forward Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) tied the game for Hobart in the 77th minute. Klotz received a pass in the box from sophomore midfielder Juan Vargas (Del Valle/El Paso, Texas) and fired it past the Tiger goalie. That goal put the Tigers and Statesmen into overtime. In only the fourth minute of overtime Abroms worked his magic again, ripping a shot into the left corner to give the Statesmen the 3-2 victory.

Hobart senior goalie, Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) made four stops on the day, while RIT keeper Nate Andrews (Greece Arcadia/Greece, N.Y.) also pulled in four. The Statesmen improve to 3-2-1 on the season while the Tigers fall to 1-4-1.

Hobart will kick off again on Sept. 24, when they host Utica at 4 p.m.
