GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team captured its home opener this afternoon on Cozzens Field with a 3-1 victory over SUNY-Brockport. The Statesmen were led by the offensive prowess of sophomore Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) and junior Juan Vargas (Del Valle/San Antonio, Texas).

The Golden Eagles (2-3-0) took the lead in the seventh minute when first-year Matt Westerholt (St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute/Buffalo, N.Y.) sprung junior Jacques LeReaux (Proctor/Utica, N.Y.) on a breakaway. LeReaux finished his 30-yard run with his first goal of the season.

In the 10th minute, Subotowicz equalized, finishing a beautiful cross from Vargas with a blistering shot from 12 yards out. The Statesmen (3-1-0) had a solid grasp on the match’s tempo from that point on.

Junior Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) netted the game-winner in the 33rd minute, placing another fine feed from Vargas. The Statesmen led 2-1 at halftime, holding a 10-5 advantage in shots at the break. Hobart outshot Brockport 21-12 for the game.

First-year Ben Crosky (Mount Greylock/Williamstown, Mass.) added an insurance goal, his first collegiate tally, set up by Subotowicz. In the 79th minute, Subotowicz sent a direct kick along the top of the box, that Crosky drove home for the final score.

Hobart first-year Carl Fried (Nacka Gymnasium/Alta, Sweden) earned the win in goal with four saves, while senior Shane Sutton (Honeoye Falls Lima/Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) made three stops for Brockport.

The Statesmen return to action at 4 p.m., on Sept. 16, when they visit Ithaca.
