October 11, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.The Hobart College soccer team continued its winning ways, defeating UCAA rival Skidmore College 2-1 in a rainy event. The victory puts the Statesmen at 7-4-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the UCAA so far this season. Playing in a slight drizzle both teams looked out of sync in the opening minutes of the match. The ball bounced back and forth as the players from both squads searched for their touch on the wet grass. The Statesmen defense withstood some dangerous attacks from the Thoroughbreds early in the first period, scoring first to take a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when Chris Rogers (Hebron Academy/Marietta, Ga.) volleyed a Christian Buestad (Northfield-Mt. Hermon/Orinda, Calif.) cross past the Skidmore keeper. The Statesmen returned in the second half focused on maintaining their 1-0 lead. Controlling the pace of the game and momentum, it appeared that Hobart would go on to win the game 1-0. Skidmore thought otherwise tying the game in the 80th minute when Matt Subilia (Wells/Wells, Maine) slipped his shot under Statesmen goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). Poised to go into overtime, Hobart received a free kick in the 88th minute 22 yards from the Skidmore goal, which Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) ripped past the wall and under the goalie for his eighth goal on the year. Rosier had a strong day in the net, making six saves, while his Skidmore counterpart Rollie Kielman (Hinesburg, Vt./Champlain Valley) posted two saves on the afternoon. The Statesmen return to action tomorrow, Oct. 12, hosting UCAA foe Union College at 2 p.m. |
