Hobart suffers loss to Union in overtime

October 12, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) played brilliantly in goal for the Statesmen, but was unable to stop a penalty kick in the 97th minute as UCAA rival Union College defeated Hobart 1-0.

An evenly played match that featured 13 shots from both squads, the Statesmen (7-5-1, 2-2 UCAA) were unable to break down a tough Union defense. Playing oftentimes with seven people behind the ball, the Dutchmen (6-2-2, 2-0-1) prevented any Statesmen players from penetrating their defense. A Hobart goal by Chris Rogers (Hebron Academy/Marietta, Ga.) in the middle of the second period was disallowed due to a penalty prior to the score. Scoreless at the end of 90 minutes, the two teams headed to overtime when senior Graham Lombardo (Suffield Academy/Bristol, R.I.) stepped up and buried a penalty kick in the lower right corner in the 97th minute.

Rosier kept the Statesmen alive with six outstanding saves on the afternoon. Dutchmen goalie Kevin O’Connor (South Lakes/Reston, Va.) also had six stops in the game, recording his fifth shutout of the year.

The Statesmen play again on Oct. 16, when they host Hamilton College at 4 p.m.
