September 30, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.Hobart scored four second-half goals, on its way to beating the University of Rochester 4-1 in mens non-conference soccer action this evening on Cozzens Field. Junior forward Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) led the Statesmen offense with two goals, while sophomore midfielder Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) added a goal and two assists. Struggling to find its rhythm throughout much of the first half, Hobart (7-3) weathered a seven minute period midway through the first half where the Yellowjackets had four shots, including one that hit the crossbar, and three corner kicks. However, Rochester (5-3-1) finally broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute on a well-placed shot by Gary Stom (Hempfield Area/Greensburg, Pa.). The second session proved to be an entirely different story as the Statesmen came out of the break firing on all cylinders. Just nine minutes into the half, Klotz evened the score with a perfectly placed shot into the right corner off a pass from junior midfielder Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, Conn.). Hobart took the lead just 1:18 later when Subotowicz eluded two defenders in the middle of the field and fired an unstoppable shot into the right upper ninety past the outstretched arms of Rochester keeper Brian Minehan (Lincoln-Sudbury/Lincoln, Mass.). With just over eight minutes remaining Klotz sealed the victory, taking a Subotowicz pass and slipping it past the near post for his eighth goal of the year. Junior midfielder Juan Vargas (Del Valle/El Paso, Texas) closed out the scoring for Hobart in the 88th minute with a shot into the left corner from deep in the right corner of the field. First-year Carl Fried (Nacka Gymnasium/Alta, Sweden) turned in a stellar performance in goal, making 10 stops to earn his sixth victory of the year. Minehan pulled in five saves for the Yellowjackets. The Statesmen will put their four-game win streak on the line when they resume conference action at Hamilton on Oct. 4, at 1 p.m. |
