Saints slide past Statesmen in conference opener

September 27, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y.—Playing in a steady rain, the Hobart College soccer team was unable to hold off nationally ranked St. Lawrence University, losing 3-0. Playing on the astro turf field due to wet conditions on Cozzens Field, the Statesmen were unable to stop the Saints attack.

Hobart played solid defense in the opening half, maintaining good shape to pull St. Lawrence offsides four times. However, the Saints were able to find an opening late in the first half, winning a corner kick off of a blocked shot. Jon Michael Olmstead’s (Shenendehowa/Portland, Maine) service found a streaking Shawn Watson (Horizon/Scottsdale, Ariz.) as he headed it past Hobart goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) in the 44th minute. As the rain continued to come down in the second period, the Saints continued to turn up the pressure on the Statesmen defense. In just the 47th minute St. Lawrence scored again as Charlie Bour (Penfield/Rochester, N.Y.) got in behind the defense to score a second goal. Joe Domingo(Newington/Newington, Conn.) rounded out the scoring putting away a third goal in the 76th minute. The Hobart offense was unable to finish one of their 12 shots on the evening.

Rosier played a solid game in goal for the Statesmen, making 4 quality saves on the evening. St. Lawrence keeper Dustin Crooker (Horseheads/Horseheads, N.Y.) faced five shots during the 90 minutes.

The Statesmen return to action again tomorrow, hosting Clarkson at 2 p.m., at a site to be determined after Cozzens Field is evaluated tomorrow morning.
