October 20, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y.--The Alfred University soccer team scored three unanswered goals to hand Hobart College its first loss on newly dedicated John H. Cozzens, Jr.' 41 Memorial Field on Senior Day. The Statesmen outplayed the Saxons early, keeping the ball in the Alfred end much of the first half. At the 20-minute mark, senior forward Jesse Martin (Cicero-N. Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) buried a loose ball to put Hobart up 1-0. In the 39th minute, Alfred senior midfielder Jon Bridges (Topeka/Topeka, Kan.) set up first-year midfielder Stephen Robin's (Ponaganset/Foster, R.I.) game-tying goal. In the second half, the Saxons took control of the game. In the 60th minute, a shot by first-year forward Brendan Rice (Niskayuna/Schenectady, N.Y.) eluded junior goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) to give Alfred a 2-1 lead. At the 78:27 mark, sophomore back Christopher Dionne (Marbledale, Conn./Sheepaug Reg.) stole the ball and set up sophomore midfielder Ian Edmonds (Adams/Telford, England) to close the scoring, as the Saxons went on to the 3-1 victory. In goal, Rosier finished with five saves for Hobart, while senior Kevin Ball (Linsly School/Wheeling, W.Va.) stopped five shots for Alfred (10-1-2). The Statesmen (6-7-3) wrap up their Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association
schedule on Oct. 24, when they travel to Hamilton College for a 3 p.m.
