Statesmen tie Cardinals, 1-1

Sepstember 8, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.- In its home opener, the Hobart College soccer team fought St. John Fisher to a 1-1 double-overtime draw. The contest was the first ever played on John H. Cozzens, Jr. '41 Memorial Field.

The Statesmen jumped out to an early lead on first-year forward Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) third goal of the year in the sixth minute. Klotz took a pass from junior defender Bryan Bome (Marcellus/Syracuse, N.Y.) fired the ball past Cardinal goalie J.R. Brau (Walpole/Walpole, Mass.) for a 1-0 lead. St. John Fisher evened the game in the 36th minute on a goal from sophomore defender Doug Nicholson (Holley/Clarendon, N.Y.).

In the second half, neither team could grab the lead despite several quality scoring chances. In the 78th minute, senior forward Jesse Martin (Cicero-North Syracuse/Liverpool, N.Y.) ripped a shot off the crossbar. Klotz's attempt at a second goal was stoned on the rebound by Brau, but that was as close as Hobart came in regulation.

Through two overtime periods the teams traded chances, but couldn't come up with the game-winner. Junior goalie Truman Brizee (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, N.Y.) was strong in his second start of the year, making seven saves for Hobart. Brau finished with six stops for the Cardinals (0-2-1).

The Statesmen (1-1-2) return to action on Sept. 11, at RIT. The Tigers won last season's
