October 5, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.The Hobart College soccer team celebrated its 50th season in style with a 7-2 victory over the visiting Scranton Royals in a non-conference matchup. The Statesmen improve to 6-4-1 on the season, while the Royals fall to 3-7 for 2002. Hobart wasted little time, taking the lead in the fifth minute when sophomore Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, Conn.) ripped a shot into the right upper-ninety. Just over 10 minutes later, first-year Matt Vesonder (Mountain Lakes/Boonton Township, N.J.) finished Ramez Ghalys (Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse, N.Y.) slotted ball to the six-yard line. The second half was an entertaining one, with seven goals scored between the two teams. Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) scored his seventh goal of the season by putting Vesonders cross into the back of the net. The Statesmen received four more goals from as many players to give the Statesmen the lopsided victory. The Royals goals were scored by Jeremy Basedow (Hunterdon Central/Flemington, N.J.) in the 62nd minute, while Peter Toscano (Monsignor Farrell/Staten Island, N.Y.) netted the second goal in the 84th minute. Goalkeeper Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) made five saves on the afternoon, giving up one goal, while Chris Maravalli (Mt. St. Joseph Academy/Rutland, Vt.) got beat on Scrantons second goal. Scranton goalies Peter Boychuk (Avon/Avon, Conn.) and Chris Vanaskie (Bishop Neumann/Williamsport, Pa.) combined for eight saves on the afternoon. The Statesmen are back in action on Oct. 11, hosting Skidmore at 4 p.m., in a conference match. |
