October 29, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.The Hobart College soccer team scored in the opening five minutes but was unable to keep the lead, losing to Nazareth College 3-1 in a non-conference match. The Statesmen fall to 10-7-1 on the season, while the Golden Flyers improve to 11-3-1 overall. Hobart jumped off to an early lead when sophomore Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) touched the ball over the goal line after sophomore Dan Abroms (Pomfret School/New Canaan, Conn.) headed the ball towards goal off of Micke Subotowiczs (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) corner kick in the fifth minute. The Statesmen held their 1-0 lead until the 45th minute when Jefferson Dargout (Franklin/Rochester, N.Y.) broke loose and chipped a through ball over senior goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.). Knotted at one after the opening 45 minutes, Hobart nearly took a 2-1 lead early in the second half as Nazareth goalie Steve Hogan (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) made two nice plays to deny the Statesmen the 2-1 edge. Nazareth grabbed the lead for good in the 59th minute on a shot from six yards out by Kevin Thornton (Spencerport/Spencerport, N.Y.). The Golden Flyers sealed the victory with a Juan Aveiro (White Plains/White Plains, N.Y.) goal in the 78th minute. In goal, Rosier went the distance, making one stop, while Hogan (West Genesee/Camillus, N.Y.) pulled in five saves in 90 minutes for Nazareth. The Statesmen will close out the regular season on Nov. 2, when they travel to Fredonia for a 1 p.m. non-conference match. |
