Statesmen ride Subotowicz hat trick past Red Hawks

September 26, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College sophomore Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) recorded his first career hat trick to guide the Statesmen past visiting Rensselaer 5-2 in men’s UCAA soccer action this evening. Hobart has scored 13 goals in its last three games, including two consecutive five-goal breakouts.

After back and forth action in the opening 20 minutes, Hobart (5-3, 1-0 UCAA) took control of the game after junior Juan Vargas (Del Valle/El Paso, Texas) took a long ball from the back and beat RPI goalie Greg Goehle (Newfield/Seldon, N.Y.) in the 29th minute. Just over six minutes later, Subotowicz netted his sixth goal of the season when junior Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) found him wide open right in front of the goal.

Coming out of the break with the always dangerous 2-0 lead, sophomore Matt Vesonder (Mountain Lakes/Boonton Township, N.J.) put the game away for good 11 minutes into the second half with a perfectly struck shot into the left corner of the net. The Red Hawks (2-2, 0-1 UCAA) cut the lead back to two three minutes later with a Craig DiDomenico (Commack/Commack, N.Y.) goal, but it would be too little too late, as Subotowicz tallied scores in the 73rd and 78th minutes. RPI’s Tim Fisher (Dighton-Rehoboth/Rehoboth, Mass.) rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 88th minute of play.

First-year keeper Carl Fried (Nacka Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) collected his fourth win of the season, making two saves in 80 minutes of action, while Goehle pulled in four stops for Rensselaer in 77 minutes.

Hobart returns to action on Sept. 27, when it hosts Vassar College at 2 p.m.
