Statesmen top Red Hawks in OT

Mortimer

October 16, 2001

GENEVA, N.Y.--The Hobart College soccer team need 27 seven extra seconds to defeat Rensselaer 1-0 in a windy, rain-soaked contest. With the victory the Statesmen climb back to the .500 mark and improve to 2-0-3 in overtime matches.

Defense controlled the play in the first half with neither team allowing many quality scoring chances. First-year forward Joel Andruski (Shenenedehowa/Clifton Park, N.Y.) gave Hobart its best chance of the first 45 minutes. Andruski fired a low shot on junior goalie Marc Salmin (Northport/Northport, N.Y.) who deflected it into the post and the game was scoreless at the half.

In the second half, both teams fought for control of the play in heavy winds and rain. Rensselaer increased its pressure as the time ran down, forcing three corner kicks and taking several quality shots on goal, but couldn't solve junior goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.).

Just 27 seconds into overtime, first-year midfielder Tavish Mortimer (Providence Country Day/Mansfield, Mass.) sent a long cross toward the goal that was misjudged by Salmin and rolled in the net for the 1-0 Hobart win. The goal was his first as a Statesman.

Rosier made five saves for his third shutout of the season. Salmin stopped four shots for Rensselaer (1-10-0, 0-6-0 UCAA).

Hobart (6-6-3, 2-3-1 UCAA) will dedicate John H. Cozzens, Jr. '41 Memorial Field at 11 a.m. on Oct. 20, with the Statesmen-Alfred University game to follow at noon. Last season, the Saxons shutout Hobart, 2-0, in Alfred.
