December 11, 2003

GENEVA, N.Y.—The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recently announced its 2003 Division III Men’s All-Northeast Region Teams. Hobart College placed three players on the teams. First-year back Farid Hafsia (Huddinge Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) and sophomore forward Micke Subotowicz (Farsta Gymnasium/Stockholm, Sweden) headlined the group, collecting first-team honors, while junior forward Ricky Klotz (Homer/Cortland, N.Y.) earned third-team recognition. Subotowicz and Klotz are both repeat selections after both garnered third-team accolades a year ago.

The 2003 UCAA Rookie of the Year, Hafsia anchored a Statesmen backline that posted five shutouts—the most since the 1999 team had seven—and finished with a 1.41 goals against average. He tallied his first collegiate point against RIT, assisting on a goal by Klotz. An All-UCAA first-team honoree, Hafsia is the only rookie represented on the first-team and just one of two named overall.

The 2003 UCAA Player of the Year, Subotowicz led a high-powered offense with 12 goals and 10 assists for 34, the most points by a Statesman since 2002 Hall of Fame Inductee Jeff Saunders ’92 had 41 in 1992. After only two seasons with the Statesmen he ranks fifth on the career assists list with 17. A technically and tactically gifted player, Subotowicz notched at least three points in seven different games this year. His 10 assists this season is third all-time, while his 34 points ranks fifth in the single-season records book.

Klotz paced the Statesmen this season with 14 goals, including a league best six game-winners. Selected to the All-UCAA first-team, he propelled Hobart into the UCAA Tournament Championship, netting the lone goal in a 1-0 upset victory over No. 25 Hamilton College. His 14 scores this season are fifth all-time, while his 28 career goals and 63 career points are sixth and eighth, respectively.

Hobart had an outstanding season, finishing with a 14-7-1 record and earning its first postseason bid in 11 years. Capturing the most wins since the 1992 squad went 15-0-1, the Statesmen advanced to the UCAA Tournament Championship game before falling to No. 6 St. Lawrence 1-0 in double overtime. Its play during the conference tournament propelled Hobart into the national rankings at No. 16 for the first time since the Statesmen were ranked first in 1992. Earning the top seed in the ECAC Northeast Tournament, Hobart ended its season with a 4-0 loss to Geneseo in the semifinals.
