November 15, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.First-year Tyler Green (Jesuit College Prep/Dallas, Texas) scored two goals in the second half to lead the University of Rochester past Plattsburgh State 3-1 this afternoon in the ECAC Mens Soccer Northeast Semifinal. The third seeded Yellowjackets will try to secure their fourth consecutive ECAC crown tomorrow when they take on fourth seeded Geneseo, who beat top seed Hobart 4-0 earlier, at 1 p.m. on McCooey Field. Neither team was able to break into the scoring column in the opening 45 minutes, with the Yellowjackets holding a 5-4 edge in shots. Rochester finally broke the tie in the 61st minute when Green headed in his own rebound off the crossbar, putting the Yellowjackets up 1-0. Five minutes later the Cardinals tied the game on a Mike Figliola (Iona Catholic/Missassauga, Ontario) penalty kick. Sophomore Nate Micklos (Palatine/Palatine, Ill.) took a pass from classmate Damien Hallatt (Penfield/Rochester, N.Y.) two minutes later and struck a beautiful shot from the top of the penalty box past the Plattsburgh goalie. Green put the game out of the Cardinals reach in the 79th minute with his second goal of the game. Senior keeper Brian Minehan (Lincoln-Sudbury/Lincoln, Mass.) went the distance, making two saves for Rochester, while Plattsburgh sophomore Jeff Giammettei (Keene State/Plattsburgh, N.Y.) pulled in nine stops in 90 minutes of action. Geneseo (11-6-3) and Rochester faced off earlier in the season on Sept. 12, with the Yellowjackets shutting out the Knights 3-0. |
