September 25, 2001 GENEVA, N.Y.--The University of Rochester soccer team defeated Hobart College 3-0 in the first soccer game to be played at the 2001 Artificial Turf Stadium. The game was moved from John H. Cozzens, Jr. '41 Memorial Field to the turf field due to the rainy conditions. The Yellowjackets (6-0-1) came out fast, taking control of the play early. In the 18th minute, senior forward Bill Miller (Sewickley Academy/Pittsburgh, Pa.) fired a shot past junior goalie Cory Rosier (Liverpool/Liverpool, N.Y.) that deflected off a Statesmen defender and into the net. Sophomore midfielder Ben Cross (Pittsford-Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) recorded the assist on the play. In the second half, Rochester kept up the pressure and took a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute. Junior Jacques Appleby (Hebert Henry Dow/Zurich, Switzerland) corralled a loose ball and blasted through a crowd to the right of Rosier. Three minutes later, the Yellowjackets sealed the Statesmen's fate on a goal from junior midfielder Jeff Parrinello (Pittsford-Mendon/Pittsford, N.Y.) and Rochester went on to the 3-0 win. Yellowjacket sophomore goalie Brian Minehan (Lincoln-Sudbury/Lincoln, Mass.) made three saves before giving way to first-year Peter Francis (Pittsford-Sutherland/Rochester, N.Y.) who didn't face a shot on goal in the final 24 minutes. Rosier made nine stops for Hobart (3-3-2). The Statesmen travel to UCAA foe Union College on Sept. 28, for a 4 p.m.
contest. Hobart beat the Dutchmen 1-0, in Geneva last season. |
