Smith elevated to U.S. junior squash head coach

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart graduate Chris Smith ’98 recently was promoted to head coach of the U.S. Junior Men’s Squash team by the U.S. Squash Racquets Association. He will direct Team USA as it prepares for the World Championships in Palmerston North, New Zealand in 2006.
A native of Newport, R.I., and a graduate of Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., Smith was a four-year letterwinner for the Statesmen. He compiled a 47-26 record at Hobart, serving as team captain during his senior season. Smith was a two-time winner of the Dr. Frank P. Smith ’36 Award (1996-97, ’97-98), in addition to earning the 1995-96 Hobart Squash Trophy Award and the 1994-95 Hobart Squash Rookie Award.
An assistant coach for the past two years of the U.S. Men’s Junior team, Smith has coached in a wide-array of international competitions, including the 2004 World Junior Men’s Team and Individual Championships in Islamabad, Pakistan.
In addition to his work with the national program, Smith is the director of squash programs at SquashBusters in Boston, Mass. The first program of its kind in the country, SquashBusters provides academic tutoring, mentoring, community service, and squash instruction and competition for middle school and high school students. The program, which teaches the game to nearly 100 kids, has had several individuals ranked among the top-25 in the nation.
