Squash seeks Liberty League 3-peat
November 18 , 2005
GENEVA, N.Y.—Under the watchful eye of 11th-year Head Coach Carol Weymuller, the Hobart College squash team has hoisted two consecutive Liberty League trophies. In 2004-05, the Statesmen completed the season as the 12th-ranked team in the nation, registering an overall record of 14-9.
The two-time Liberty League Coach of the Year, Weymuller will have a young, but talented squad as she returns just two starters from last season.
A two-time All-Liberty League first-team selection, junior Prateek Patni (Daly College/Indore, India) will set the tone for the Statesmen from the No. 1 position. He registered an overall record of 10-13, including a 5-0 mark in the League, from the No. 2 slot last season. A patient player, Patni uses precise shots to pressure his opponents during long rallies.
First-year Cale Forgues (Ridley College/Kemptville, Ontartio) will make his Hobart debut from the No. 2 position. A technically sound player, Forgues has impressed the coaching staff with his competitiveness during workouts.
At the No. 3 position, junior Brian Shiver (Delbarton School/Morristown, N.J.) features a solid all-court game. He completed his sophomore campaign with a 10-7 overall record, including 5-0 mark in the conference, at No. 7.
Junior Andrew McDonough (Summit/Summit, N.J) will anchor the middle of the Statesmen lineup. In limited action last season, McDonough posted a record of 6-3, including a 4-1 mark in the Liberty League.
Junior Andrew Conrad (Millbrook School/Haverford, Pa.) will return to the starting nine at the No. 5 position. He posted a 14-7 overall record, including a perfect 5-0 in conference mark. During the 2003 inaugural conference championship tournament, Conrad registered three victories and earned All-Liberty League honorable mention.
Looking to break into the starting nine are sophomore Ned Lanphier (Choate Rosemary Hall/Ross, Calif.), junior John Keating (Mainland/Linwood, N.J.), first-year Peter Hansen (Woodbury Forest School), and sophomore Graham Gardiner (Woodberry Forest School/Locust Valley, N.Y.).
Hobart will travel to the St. Lawrence University this weekend in hopes of hoisting its third consecutive Liberty League Championship trophy. The two-day round robin tournament begins at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, when the Statesmen square off with Rochester.
