Clutsam, Crockett grab UCAA awards

Henry Clutsam

Tucker Crockett

March 1, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—Fresh off the program’s best finish in the College Squash Association National Championships, two Hobart squash players were recognized by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association today. Junior Henry Clutsam (Blair Academy/New Vernon, N.J.) and first-year Tucker Crockett (Episcopal Academy/Rosemont, Pa.) were named the UCAA co-Performer and co-Rookie of the Week, respectively.

This is Crockett’s fourth rookie of the week award from the UCAA, while Clutsam is receiving his first performer of the week honor.

With a 2-1 showing over the weekend, Clutsam, playing at No. 4, finished the season tied for the best record on the team, 17-7 (.708), helping the Statesmen to a second place finish in the Hoehn Trophy standings (10th overall). He helped Hobart to its first victory over a higher ranked opponent this season in the Hoehn quarterfinals, as the Statesmen topped No. 10 Brown, 5-4. Clutsam defeated the Bears’ David Krupnick 3-0 (9-5, 10-8, 10-8) at No. 4. The next afternoon, Clutsam won again in a 5-4 victory over No. 11 Amherst. He defeated the Jeffs' Nick Haslett 3-1 (10-9, 9-2, 3-9, 9-3). Clutsam fell in the Hoehn title match 3-0.

Crockett, in the No. 6 spot, also turned in a 2-1 weekend to finish his rookie campaign with a 17-7 record. He bounced back from a quarterfinal loss with a 3-0 victory over No. 11 Amherst's Asad Haque (9-4, 9-6, 9-4). The following afternoon he posted another victory, toppling No. 9 Williams’ Todd Herlihy, 3-1 (9-5, 6-9, 9-5, 9-2).

Hobart’s 10th place finish is the best in the program’s history. The Statesmen finished 11th in 1993-94. The current squad’s record of 15-9 exceeded the program’s record for wins in a season by two, established by the same 1993-94 Statesmen (13-4).
