November 17, 2003 GENEVA, N.Y.--Hobart junior Freddy Cook (St. George's School/Greenwich, Conn.) and first-year Andy Conrad (Millbrook School/Haverford, Pa.) were named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Squash Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, this afternoon. Cook opened the season with three victories in a 2-1 weekend for the Statesmen. On Saturday morning, he won his opening match at No. 7, 3-0 (9-7, 10-8, 9-3) over Patrick Kruse of Navy, as Hobart sunk the Midshipmen 8-1. On Saturday afternoon, Cook defeated Denison's Kwin Burkardt, 3-0 (9-3, 9-4, 9-3), as the Statesmen defeated the Big Red 8-1. On Sunday, Cooke won a hard faught 3-2 victory at No. 7 versus Franklin & Marshall's Karen Behal (9-10, 9-2, 6-9, 9-2, 9-1), but the Statesmen bowed to the Diplomats 6-3. Conrad opened his collegiate career with three victories for the Statesmen. At Navy, Conrad won 3-1 at No. 8 over David Haines (9-4, 9-1, 4-9, 9-7). Against Denison, Conrad topped Brad Young 3-0 (9-5, 9-0, 9-6). Conrad also got the better of F&M's Evan Burton 3-1 (3-9, 9-1, 9-3, 9-2). The Statesmen return to action on Nov. 22-23, in the inaugural UCAA Championship, hosted by St. Lawrence University. |
