March 1, 2003 HARTFORD, Conn.Hobart College sophomore Tejvir Rathore (Daly College/Indore M.P., India) played his way in to the semifinal round of the College Squash Association Individual Championships at Trinity College. First-year Gavin Johnstone-Butcher (St. Pauls School/Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) and senior Angel Magaña (Colegio San Francisco/San Salvador, El Salvador) joined Rathore in the Malloy Division (B division) of the championships. Johnstone-Butcher and Magaña both fell into the consolation bracket after losing their opening matches, with the rookie battling his way to the semifinals of the consolation draw. Ranked fourth in the tournament, Rathore disposed of his first opponent 3-0 (9-5, 9-7, 9-6), while needing four games to get past the 13th (10-9, 9-4, 1-9, 10-8) and 12th-seeded (5-9, 10-8, 10-8, 9-4) players, respectively. Sporting a 13-7 record this season, Hobarts top player will face off against the top seed at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon. Johnstone-Butcher entered the competition seeded 14th and fell 0-3 (5-9, 1-9, 7-9) in his opening contest. Dropping into the consolation bracket he picked up his play, beating his next opponent 3-0 (9-7, 9-4, 9-6) while needing five games (3-9, 9-7, 9-2, 3-9, 9-6) to qualify for the semifinals. Hobarts number two player, he is 13-7 for the season. His semifinal match began at 2:30 this afternoon. Magaña lost his first two matches of the weekend, with the second defeat coming in five games. He finishes the season with a 9-10 overall record. The final rounds will be held throughout the day on March 2. |
