3 Statesmen earn ITA All-Academic honors

GENEVA, N.Y.—Three Hobart tennis players recently were named to the 2004-05 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team. Senior Derrick Moore (Whitesboro/Deerfield, N.Y.), junior Matt Jacobus (S. Burlington/S. Burlington, Vt.), and sophomore Matt Silver (Weston/Weston, Conn.) were recognized for their outstanding efforts in the classroom and on the tennis courts.

Moore earned his third consecutive appearance on the ITA’s All-Academic Team, while Silver is making his second straight appearance.

Moore moved his way from the sixth to the fourth spot in singles play as the season progressed. He also finished with a record of 3-1 at third doubles. A three-year letterwinner, Moore posted a career mark of 9-13 in singles play and 7-7 in doubles action. A 2005 Liberty League All-Academic Team selection, he graduated from Hobart in May with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

Jacobus played at the fourth and fifth positions in singles play and was 5-6 at third doubles. He also garned the most wins at the third position in doubles. Through three seasons, Jacobus is 20-27 in singles and 17-25 in doubles action. The economics major was also named to the 2005 Liberty League All-Academic Team.

Silver, playing in both the third and second singles slot for the Statesmen finished the season with a record of 12-8, second on the team in singles wins. Also a strong doubles competitor, he earned eight wins playing in the number one spot. Through two seasons, Silver is 29-13 in singles play and 18-22 in doubles. A biology major, he was one of four Statesmen named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams this season. Silver also earned a spot on the Liberty League All-Academic team and received All-Liberty League praise with doubles partner, senior Peter Piné.

To be named to the ITA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must be a varsity letterwinner and have a grade point average of at least 3.5 for the academic year.
