GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart tennis team will begin its Liberty League title defense against the Union Dutchmen on April 23, at St. Lawrence. Led by 10th-year Head Coach Carol Weymuller, the third-seeded Statesmen will square off with the No. 6 Dutchmen at 9 a.m., on the Sammis Tennis Courts.
The 15th head coach in 68 seasons of varsity tennis, Weymuller became Hobart’s career leader in wins on April 9—surpassing Dick Taylor’s 97 wins in 11 seasons—with a 6-1 victory at Ithaca. She currently sports a 99-97 record with the Statesmen.
Hobart and Union have not faced each other on the tennis courts since April 26, 2003. The Statesmen won that meeting 4-0 in the semifinals of the Liberty League Tournament at Vassar College. The Liberty League does not require member tennis teams to play a regular season round-robin.
On the courts, senior Peter Piné (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) and sophomore Matt Silver (Weston/Weston, Conn.) hold down the top two singles spots and form the top doubles tandem for the Statesmen. Piné boasts a team best 18-5 singles record this season, while Silver is 9-8 at second singles. As a doubles team, Piné and Silver are 6-3.
On April 19, Piné picked up an impressive three-set victory over RIT’s David Chachu, the 14th-ranked singles player in the ITA Northeast Region, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The win raised his career singles record to 76-23, the most singles victories by a Statesman.
The winner of the Hobart-Union match will face the winner of No. 2 Vassar vs. No. 7 Clarkson at 1 p.m. The conference championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on April 24, on the Sammis Tennis Courts.
