Statesmen compete at the Wilson/ITA Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team competed at the Wilson/ITA Northeast Regional Championships this weekend at Vassar College.

Junior Matt Silver (Weston/Weston, Conn.) defeated Jeremy Rosen of Vassar College 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the 64-player singles draw before bowing out to eventual champion Mikhail Gurvich of New York University 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.

First-year James Micheroni (Sharon/Sharon, Mass.) also advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over SUNY Oneonta’s Matt Deitch. Micheroni lost to New York University’s Craig Berger 6-4, 6-0 in the round of 32.

Although senior Matt Jacobus (South Burlington/South Burlington, Vt.) and sophomore Charlie Davis (Manlius-Pebble Hill School/Cazenovia, N.Y.) lost their opening round matches, they battled back in the singles consolation draw. Jacobus defeated Ross Lieblich of Drew University 8-6 before losing to Rensselaer’s Ben Rosenthal, 8-6. Davis stopped Greg Rodilosso of Skidmore College 8-3 and Jeff DiOrio of Stevens College before losing to Rosen in a close semifinal match, 8-6.

Hobart will open up its spring season on March 12 in Hilton Head, S.C., against Nebraska Wesleyan.
