Statesmen tennis to play for 3rd in Liberty League

Liberty League logoGENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart tennis team split a pair of matches today on the first day of the 2007 Liberty League Men's Tennis Tournament. The fourth-seeded Statesmen posted a 5-3 win over No. 5 Union in the quarterfinals, but lost to No. 1 Skidmore in the semifinals 7-2.

Hobart started the day slowly, winning just one of the three doubles matches, thanks to Adam Cohn and Ronny Koenig's 8-0 win at No. 2. Koenig, Charlie Davis, Adam Cohn, and Brandon Gillespie earned singles points to secure the match for the Statesmen, Cohn and Gillespie won in straight sets.

In the afternoon, the Thoroughbreds booked a return trip to the Liberty League title match with a convincing win over Hobart. James Micheroni and Matt Silver notched an 8-5 win at first doubles, while Micheroni picked up the lone singles victory taking a thrilling 2-6, 6-4, 17-15 win at No. 1.

Hobart will face No. 3 St. Lawrence in the third place match on April 22, at 9 a.m. Skidmore will take on No. 2 Vassar in the championship match at noon.
