Hobart tennis extends win streak to six

April 8, 2004

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart tennis team defeated visiting Ithaca this afternoon in the Bristol Field House 6-1 to extend its win streak to six matches. The Statesmen improve their record to 13-2, just three victories shy of the school record for wins in a season.

The marquee match-up of the day was first doubles that pitted Hobart’s Peter Piné (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) and Trevor McAndrew (Northfield Mount Hermon/Westerly, R.I.) against Ithaca’s Blair Watkins (Central Bucks East/Doylestown, Pa.) and Chris Ciolino (Sparta/Sparta, N.J.). The Statesmen pair entered the match ranked ninth in the ITA Northeast rankings, while the Bombers’ duo was 15th. Piné and McAndrew ran their doubles mark to 14-5 with an 8-4 victory.

The Hobart tandem of Adam Raffa (Concord-Carlisle/Concord, Mass.) and Matt Silver (Weston/Weston, Conn.) won at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point.

The Statesmen won five of the six singles matches, including wins by Raffa at No. 3 and Silver at No. 4 that gave both players their seventh consecutive singles win.

Ciolino earned the lone point for Ithaca (5-9) with a 6-7 (5), 6-2, 11-9 win over McAndrew at No. 2.

Hobart will look to extend its current win streak to a season’s best seven matches on April 14, when the Statesmen travel to Hamilton for a 4 p.m. match.
