Piné, Silver garner UCAA weekly awards

GENEVA, N.Y.—For the second week in a row, the Hobart tennis team swept the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association’s weekly awards. Junior Peter Piné (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) and first-year Matt Silver (Weston/Weston, Conn.) were named the UCAA Performer of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Piné led the Statesmen to a pair of victories this week, downing Nazareth 7-0 and Skidmore, the No. 8 team in the Northeast, 6-1. He won both of his first singles matches in straight sets, defeating Nazareth’s Ben Klempka 6-0, 6-0 and Skidmore’s Greg Sher 6-4, 6-4. In doubles play, he teamed up with senior Trevor McAndrew to win both first doubles matches, 8-5 over the Golden Flyers and 8-2 over the Thoroughbreds.

For the season, Piné is 13-6 in singles action and 14-6 in doubles play.

Silver won both of his singles matches at No. 4, defeating Nazareth’s Tim Sorge 6-1, 6-0 and Skidmore’s Andrew Watson 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. In doubles play, he split, earning a victory with Adam Raffa at No. 2 over Nazareth (8-1), while falling at No. 3 with teammate Matt Jacobus to Skidmore, 8-2.

This is Silver’s second straight UCAA Rookie of the Week award. For the season, he sports a 12-4 record in singles and is 7-9 in doubles.

Ranked 15th in the latest ITA Northeast rankings, the Statesmen (11-2) are back in action at 4 p.m., on April 6, at St. John Fisher.
