September 28, 2003 POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.--The third seeded Hobart tennis doubles team of senior Trevor McAndrew (Northfield Mount Hermon School/Westerly, R.I.) and junior Peter Piné (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) lost in the championship match of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Championships this afternoon. The Statesmen won five matches this weekend before top seeded Partha Bhattacharya and Dan Williford of Rochester topped them in the finale, 9-7. Piné also made a strong run in the singles championship draw, advancing to the quarterfinal round with three straight-set wins before bowing to RIT’s David Chachu, 6-4, 6-4. McAndrew won his opening round match against Ithaca’s Joe Young, 6-4, 6-2, but lost to J.D. Spina of Drew in the round of 32, 4-6, 6-4 (11-9). Sophomore Adam Raffa (Concord-Carlisle/Concord, Mass.) also reached the second round with a 7-6 (1), 6-3 win over Vassar’s Andrew Ezekowitz. Raffa teamed with first-year Matt Silver (Weston/Weston, Conn.) in doubles play, reaching the round of 16 with an 8-3 win over Chris Ciolino and Blair Watkins of Ithaca. |
