October 2, 2002 GENEVA, N.Y.The Hobart College tennis team wrapped up its fall schedule this past weekend at the ITA Regional Championships, hosted by Vassar College. Sophomore Peter Piné (Princeton/Princeton, N.J.) followed his title-winning performance at the Rochester Invitational with a semifinal appearance at the ITA Championships. Seeded fifth in the competition, Piné won his first four matches of the tournament before losing in the semifinal to top-seeded Demetris Leontis of NYU 6-2, 6-1. That loss was Pines first of the year as he finished with a 10-1 record in singles play. The only other Statesman competing at the tournament was junior Jimmie Banta (Wardlaw-Hartridge/Westfield, N.J.). Losing his first round match 8-2, Banta bounced back in the consolation bracket to win his second match of the championships, 8-3. He was eliminated when he lost 8-3 in the next round, putting him at a 3-6 overall record in singles. Piné and Banta, paired up for the first time were seeded fourth in the doubles competition. They dropped their first round opponent 8-4, but were unable to hang on to the next match, losing to the pair from Oneonta, 8-4. The Statesmen finished 2-1 for the fall, reaching the finals of the Flower City Tournament in Rochester, N.Y. |
