Weymuller to receive USPTA award

Carol Weymuller

April 26, 2002

GENEVA, N.Y. – The U.S. Professional Tennis Association has announced Hobart College Head Tennis Coach Carol Weymuller as its 2002 Tex Schwab Lifetime Achievement Award winner. The award is given annually to a USPTA member that has made major contributions to the game of tennis throughout his or her lifetime.

Weymuller, in her seventh season at Hobart, has guided the Statesmen to their finest campaign in her tenure. Hobart posted a regular season record of 14-3 and heads into the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament as the No. 2 seed. The Statesmen have won eight matches in a row.

As a tennis player, Weymuller was a four-year member of the men’s varsity team at Bethany (W.Va.) College. She helped the Bison win conference championships in 1967 and 1968 and appeared in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.” As a junior player she was nationally ranked as high as fifth and won the Orange Bowl championship three times. In 1968 she was on the Junior Wightman Cup Team and played in the U.S. Open at Forest Hills. The following year she was co-ranked as the No. 1 woman in New England. In 1973, Weymuller won the USPTA National Singles Championship.

Hobart faces seventh-seeded Union College at 11 a.m., on April 27, in the first round of the UCAA Tournament at St. Lawrence University. Last season, the Statesmen finished third in the league championship at Vassar.
