HWS captures MAISA North #1

April 4, 2005

GENEVA, N.Y.—The host Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team captured the Mid Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association North #1 this past weekend on Seneca Lake. HWS dominated the 14-team field, turning in a low score of 65, 44 points better than runner-up Navy.

Sailing in the A division for the Colleges were senior skipper Wiley Wakeman (Groton School/Cohasset, Mass.) and first-year crew Kate Wilson (Prout School/Hope Valley, R.I.). The duo combined to win four of the 12 races and never finished lower than 10th and bested New York Maritime by 14 points for first place.

First-year skipper James Landi (Salisbury School/Salisbury, Md.) and first-year crew Laura Golson (Marin Academy/Ross, Calif.) also garnered top honors in the B division with a low score of 30. Winning four times during the two-day event, Landi and Golson never came in lower than eighth place and were among the top three boats in all 12 competitions.

Climbing to fourth in the most recent Sailing World College Rankings, HWS returns to action on April 9-10, in three regattas. Hobart and William Smith will host the Captain Prosser Trophy—the MAISA qualifier for the ICSA Team Racing Championships—and will travel to the Ted Ferrarone Team Race at Yale and the President’s Trophy at Boston University.
