HWS edges Navy to win MAISA Open

ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team never finishes lower than fourth in 32 races this past weekend to capture the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Open at Cornell University. Navy came in second, while Kings Point rounded out the top three in the eight-team event.

Competing in the A division for the Colleges were first-years Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.) and Laura Golson (Marin Academy/Ross, Calif.). The pair won the opening nine races and never finished lower than third in 16 outings to win the division with a low score of 26 points.

In B division racing, it was first-years James Landi (Salisbury School/Salisbury, Md.) and Dan Thompson (Mounds View/North Oaks, Minn.) winning four races and garnering runner-up honors seven times to help HWS to the overall victory.

Ranked third in the Sailing World College Rankings, HWS will compete for a spot in the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy Championships at the America Trophy at Navy. Hobart and William Smith were the runners-up at the 2004 America Trophy.
