HWS edges Yale for 4th place at Truxtun Umsted Regatta

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The Hobart and William Smith College sailing team edged out Yale University in a tiebreaker to take fourth place in the 20-team field at the Truxtun Umsted Regatta hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. Harvard finished atop the standings, while Navy and St. Mary’s College rounded out the top three, respectively.
In A division racing, senior skipper John Storck (St. Anthony’s/Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore crew Mandi Markee (Torrey Pines/Santa Fe, Calif.) raced to sixth place with 80 points. The duo earned seven top-10 finishes in 10 races, including a victory in the seventh outing to edge Navy by two points.
Senior Lee Sackett (Gilmour Academy/Mentor, Ohio) and junior Molly Lawson (Noble & Greenough School/Duxbury, Mass.) skippered and crewed HWS to 11th in the B division, placing among the top-10 four times.
The Colleges got strong performances from sophomore Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and first-year Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.) in the C and D division competitions to climb to fourth in the final standings.
Moore garnered seven top-10 finishes, including a victory in the first race, for seventh in the C division with 72 points. Mills rounded out the HWS sailing corps with a runner-up finish in the D division. He was among the top-nine boats in each of his 10 outings and turned in four top-three performances.
