HWS sailing captures America Trophy; headed to ICSA Dinghy Championships

May 2, 2005

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The Hobart and William Smith College sailing team captured its second Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Championship title of the season this past weekend with a win at the America Trophy hosted by Navy. The Colleges won the MAISA Team Racing Championship three weeks earlier. The victory qualifies HWS for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association/Gill Coed Dinghy Championships on June 8-10. St. Mary’s and Old Dominion earned the remaining two qualifying berths.

“Winning two district championships this year is a tribute to the work the entire team has put in throughout the year,” Head Coach Scott Iklé said. “Our success is a testament to the role players and how well they have prepared those who sail in the championship events with their hard work at practices. This has been a team effort all year.”

Sailing for HWS in the A division were senior skipper John Storck (St. Anthony’s/Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore crew Amanda Markee (Torrey Pines/Santa Fe, Calif.). In 18 races, the duo earned 14 top-five finishes in the 18-team field, including two victories, to finish second to Georgetown in the division.

Sophomore skipper Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and junior crew Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.) teamed up for B division racing, finishing second behind St. Mary’s. Moore and Nadler opened the weekend with a victory in the first outing and added nine more over the course of the two-day regatta.

Ranked third in the most recent Sailing World College Rankings, HWS has qualified for both the ICSA/Layline Team Racing Championship (June 5-7) and the ICSA/Gill Coed Dinghy Championships. William Smith also earned a berth in the ICSA/Gill Women’s Championship (June 1-3). The ICSA national championship events begin on June 1, in Austin, Texas, at the Austin Yacht Club.
