GENEVA, N.Y.—The fourth-ranked Hobart and William Smith sailing team won each of its six races this weekend to capture the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Team Race Championship. Winning the Prosser Trophy for the first time in the program’s history, HWS earned a spot in the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association/Layline Team Racing Championship on June 5-7, in Austin, Texas.
Sailing in very light conditions throughout the weekend, the seven-team field completed 22 races during the two-day regatta. Competing for the Colleges were senior John Storck (St. Anthony’s/Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Amanda Markee (Torrey Pines/Santa Fe, Calif.), senior Lee Sackett (Gilmour Academy/Mentor, Ohio) and junior Molly Lawson (Noble & Greenough School/Duxbury, Mass.), and sophomore Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and junior Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.).
HWS started the weekend with a win over third-ranked Georgetown, the Hoyas lone loss in the regatta, and never looked back as it outraced each of its opponents in the next five races to go undefeated.
Also qualifying for nationals were runner-up Georgetown and third-place St. Mary’s College.
Hobart and William Smith will compete in the ICSA/Layline Team Racing Championships on June 5-7, at the Austin Yacht Club on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas. HWS earned runner-up honors last season, losing to rival St. Mary’s College in a tie-breaker.
