HWS sails to 5th place at Owen Trophy

KINGS POINT, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team turned in a strong weekend of racing to take fifth place in the 16-team field at the Owen Trophy hosted by the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy this past weekend. Yale University took top honors, while Dartmouth, Washington College, and Connecticut College rounded out the top four, respectively.

Sailing in 16 races, first-year skipper Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.) and first-year crews Emily Golson (Marin Academy/Ross, Calif.) and Kate Wilson (Prout School/Hope Valley, R.I.) finished among the top half of the boats in nine races, including earning three victories, to earn eighth place with118 points. Golson sailed in the first eight races for HWS, while Wilson wrapped up the regatta in the final eight competitions.

In B division racing, Wilson and Golson teamed up with sophomore skipper Brian Clancy (Boston College/Scituate, Mass.) to help HWS move up the overall standings with a third-place finish in the division. Clancy and Wilson grabbed three top-five finishes in the first eight races, including one victory, while the duo of Clancy and Golson garnered top-five honors five times in the final eight outings of the weekend.

Ranked 14th in the most recent Sailing World College Rankings, the Colleges’ sailing team will host the North Spring No. 1 and travel to the Duplin Trophy at Tufts on April 2-3.
