GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Colleges Sailing Head Coach Scott Iklé ’84 recently announced the appointment of John Pearce ’04, who will serve as an assistant coach for the sailing team during the 2004-05 season. Following a very successful sailing career at Hobart, Pearce graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in May.

“I look forward to working with John,” Iklé said. “He’ll carry on the program’s tradition of excellence as a coach, just as he did as a student-athlete.”

A native of Ithaca, Pearce is a two-time All-American, earning first-team coed skipper as a senior and honorable mention coed skipper as a junior. At the 2004 Block H Awards Dinner, he received The Class of 1994 Award for extraordinary dedication to the team, above and beyond effort in practice and racing results.

Pearce led the Colleges to a second place finish in the 2004 ICSA Team Race North American Championship and a third place showing in the 2004 ICSA Dinghy North American Championship. Both were improvements over HWS’s 2003 finishes.

As a junior, Pearce helped the Colleges to fourth place in the team race championship and seventh place in dinghy championship.
Over the past nine seasons, the Hobart and William Smith sailing team has qualified for 20 ICSA Championship events, turning in 10 top-four finishes. The Colleges have produced exceptional results over the past two seasons, qualifying for four of the ICSA’s six North American championships each year, while grabbing three runner-up finishes.
