Sullivan ’04 joins sailing coaching staff
January 19, 2006
GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart and William Smith Colleges Sailing Head Coach Scott Iklé ’84 announced the appointment of Jeff Sullivan ’04 to serve as his assistant coach for the remainder of the academic year. A native of Rochester and a graduate of McQuaid High School, Sullivan enjoyed an exceptional career at Hobart as both a sailor and a student.
“We’re proud to have Jeff return to the Colleges as a coach of the sailing team,” Iklé said. “Jeff was a key sailor on some very successful teams. His experiences will help prepare and shape the team for what should be an exciting spring season.”
On the water, Sullivan represented the Colleges in seven ICSA North American Championships, including back-to-back second place finishes in the sloop championship in 2002 and 2003 and another runner up finish in the 2004 team race championship. He also represented HWS in several MAISA championship events, including district titles in the 2002 and 2003 sloop championship, while helping the Colleges to top-five finishes on five other occasions.
In the classroom, Sullivan graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry with minors in mathematics and environmental studies. He was a Hobart Deans Scholar and a Statesmen Scholar during all four of his years on campus and spent a year as a National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Fellow.
Sullivan spent his summers and the time since graduation gaining experience in the sailing world that will be valuable to the Statesmen and Herons this season. After spending the summer of 2003 as a sailing instructor at the Portland (Maine) Yacht Club, he was the head sailing instructor and racing coach at the Rochester Yacht Club during the past two summers. Sullivan is US Sailing Level I small boat and keelboat certified. He also has worked for North Sails South Carolina in Charleston, S.C., learning how to design and service sails.
The Hobart and William Smith sailing team is the defending champion of the ICSA Coed Dinghy North American Championship and the ICSA Team Race North American Championship. The 2006 racing season is scheduled to begin March 4-5, when the Colleges participate in the John Jackson Memorial Team Race Regatta in Washington, D.C.
