William Smith sailing lands berth in ICSA Nationals

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College earned a fifth place finish of 14 teams at the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s Championship this past weekend to land a berth in the ICSA/Gill Women’s Championship in Austin, Texas. St. Mary’s won the regatta, while Navy, host Georgetown, and Old Dominion grabbed the other four qualifying spots.
Senior Emlie Barkow (University Lake School/Nashotah, Wis.) and junior Molly Lawson (Noble and Greenough School/Duxbury, Mass.) paired up in the first 10 races in the A division, finishing in the top five five times. Senior Kate Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) and Barkow teamed up for the final race of the weekend, earning a second place finish to put the Herons in fifth in the division.
In B division racing, junior Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.), and senior Kate May (Cranston East/Cranston R.I.) paired up in the opening day, while first-year Kate Wilson (Prout School/Hope Valley, R.I.), sophomore Kate Brush (Champlain Valley Union/Hinesburg,Vt.), closed out the regatta for William Smith on Sunday. Nadler and May were among the top four boast in half of their outings, including a runner-up finish in the second race. Wilson and Brush sailed strong in the final day as well, garnering a top-four finish in three of their five races, including a win over Georgetown in the 10th outing.
The ICSA/Gill Women’s Championship will be held June 1-3, at the Austin Yacht Club on Lake Travis in Austin, Texas. William Smith finished 13th of 18 teams last season.
