HWS places 3rd at MAISA Sloop Championship

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team competed in three regattas last weekend. The sailors finished third out of 10 teams in the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Sloop Championship at Navy, took fourth out of 18 teams in the Hoyt Trophy held at Brown, and placed second out of 17 teams in Merchant Marine’s Fall Dinghy Regatta.
Statesmen junior Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.), and sophomores Rob Crane (Holderness School/Darien, Conn.) and Josh Parks (Portsmouth Abbey School/Middletown, R.I.) represented HWS at Navy, totaling 45 points for third place. They recorded seven top-four finishes in 10 races.
In Rhode Island, senior Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and sophomore Sarah Borup (Toms River South/Pine Beach, N.J.) placed fourth in the A division with 72 points, garnering six top-five finishes in 11 races. Racing in the B division was senior Brian Clancy (Boston College/Scituate, Mass.), junior Bill Healy (Newark/Newark, N.Y.), and senior Mandi Markee (Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.). Together they combined for fifth place, totaling 93 points.
Sophomores Austin Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) and Kaitlyn Van Nostrand (Marine Academy/Allenwood, N.J.) raced in the A division in the Fall Dinghy Regatta at Merchant Marine, tallying 59 points for second place. They finished 14 of 17 races in the top four, and never finished below seventh. In the B division, sophomore John Sampson (St. Georges School/Rumson, N.J.) and first-year Molly Pribor (Morristown-Beard School/Madison, N.J.) placed fourth with 82 points, recording six first-place finishes.
HWS, currently ranked fourth in the nation, will be back on the water on Oct. 28-29 when they compete in the War Memorial Regatta at Merchant Marine.
