Crane wins Kings Point laser opener
September 3, 2006
KINGS POINT, N.Y.—Hobart sophomore Rob Crane (Holderness School/Darien, Conn.) got the 2005-06 sailing season off to a strong start, winning the Kings Point Laser Open and qualifying for the Carl Van Duyne Regatta, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Singlehanded Championship.
Crane finished the 15-race regatta with 74 points, 13 better than the runner up from Penn. He grabbed the lead in the second race of the weekend, coincidentally from junior teammate Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, Conn.). Crane had a brief swoon in the middle of the regatta, dropping out of the lead, but regained the top spot for good with back-to-back wins in the 13th and 14th races. He sealed the victory with a third place showing in the final race.
Senior John Keating (Mainline/Linwood, N.J.) and Mills finished seventh and eighth, respectively, out of 18 sailors.
The Van Duyne Regatta will be hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy, Oct. 7-8.
