HWS Sailing wins Fall North No. 1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team totaled 76 points to win the Fall North No. 1 Regatta, held on Sept. 30-Oct. 1. Seventeen teams competed in the regatta.

The HWS sailing team also finished 12th out of 28 teams at the Faye Bennet Trophy held at Navy last weekend, and came in sixth out of 18 teams at the Danmark Trophy held at Coast Guard.

Members of the HWS team who competed in the A division combined for five first-place finishes in 11 races. Sailors Austin Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) and Kaitlyn Van Nostrand (Marine Academy/Allenwood, N.J.) competed in races 1-6 in the A division, while Jay Mills (The Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.) and Emily Pelo (Scituate/Scituate, Mass.) competed in races 7-11. Together they totaled 36 points.

Participating in the B division were Joshua Parks (Portsmouth Abbey School/Middletown, R.I.), James Landi (Salisbury School/Salisbury, Md.), John Moulthrop (The Hotchkiss School/Middlebury, Conn.), Meghan Jordan (Clarence Central/ East Amherst, N.Y.), Justin Bauer (Portsmouth Abbey School/Burlington, Conn.), and Hunter Farris (Trinity/Lakewood, Ohio), who combined for 40 points and four first-place finishes.

Along with HWS, Georgetown (90 points), Washington College (95), Navy (114), and Cornell (122) rounded out the top five teams in the regatta.

The HWS sailors will be back on the water on Oct. 7-8 when they host the Fall Intersectional. In addition, the Statesmen will compete at Navy for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy next weekend, while the Herons will take part in the Women’s Intersectional, also held at Navy.
