HWS graduates win sailing championship

September 25, 2006

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—William Smith graduate Amanda Callahan ’03 (Canton, Mass.) and Hobart graduate Colin Merrick ’01 (Portsmouth, R.I.) recently sailed to victory with Team Silver Panda at the U.S. Team Racing Championship for US SAILING’s Hinman Trophy, held at the San Diego Yacht Club.

Team Silver Panda members won every race on Sunday Sept. 10, defeating Team Adirondack 2-0, Cape Cod WHishbone 3-0, and the team from Larchmont Yacht Club 3-0.

A former HWS assistant sailing coach, Merrick was a three-time ICYRA All-American and two-time MVP while at Hobart. He led the team to a second-place finish and two third-place finishes in ICYRA National Championship Regattas, and also led the Statesmen to Atlantic Coast and MAISA Dinghy Championships in 1998 and 2000.

A former All-America Crew Team member, Callahan helped the HWS sailing team to a seventh-place finish in the 2003 Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) North American Dinghy Championship, and a fourth-place finish in the ISCA North American Team Race. She also led the Colleges to a 10th-place finish in the ISCA North American Women’s Championship.
