GENEVA, N.Y.—In a weekend plagued by a lack of wind, the Hobart and William Smith sailing team enjoyed another strong weekend of racing. HWS, ranked second in the Sailing World preseason poll, won the New York Maritime Open and the Queen’s Open, finished fourth in the Nevins Trophy, and eighth in the Mrs. Hurst Bowl.
The Colleges have won seven of the 10 regattas they have competed in this fall.
At the Nevins Trophy, the most prestigious regatta of the weekend, sailors managed just seven races (compared with 14 last season). Fewer races put a higher priority on minimizing mistakes.
In A Division, senior Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and sophomore Sarah Borup (Toms River South/Pine Beach, N.J.) finished fourth, placing in the top four in the first three races and in the top 10 (out of 20 teams) in all seven races.
Both the B Division team of senior Brian Clancy (Boston College/Scituate, Mass.) and senior Mandi Markee (Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and C Division single-handed sailor sophomore Rob Crane (Holderness School/Darien, Conn.) turned in sixth place finishes. HWS earned victories in the B and C Divisions in the fourth race, but slipped in the standings with less consistency than Moore and Borup.
Boston College won the Nevins Trophy with a regatta total of 126, followed by Georgetown and Roger Williams. The Colleges were just 17 points off the winning score.
