NORFOLK, Va.—The top-ranked Hobart and William Smith sailing team captured the America Trophy, the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Coed Dinghy Championship, over the weekend. HWS, which won the America Trophy in 2005 as well, posted a regatta-low score of 111, 25 points better than runner-up Georgetown.
Junior Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and senior Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.) dominated the 18-team field in B Division, winning six of the weekend’s 15 races, taking second in six more, and placing no worse than eighth.
Junior skipper Brian Clancy (Boston College/Scituate, Mass.) with junior crew Amanda Markee (Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and senior crew Zack Goldman (Lutheran/Huntington, N.Y.) sailed to a second place finish in the A Division behind Georgetown. They turned in 11 top-five finishes.
As MAISA Champion, HWS, as well as the next three finishers (Georgetown, Kings Point, and New York Maritime), qualifies for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Coed Dinghy North American Championships May 31-June 2 in Charleston, S.C.
