CHARLESTON, S.C.—The William Smith sailing team holds the lead after the first day of racing at the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association Women’s Dinghy National Championship. After 10 of the three-day event’s 36 races, the Herons have a slim one-point lead over Navy (58-59).

Currently 14th in the latest Sailing World college rankings, William Smith leads the third-ranked Mids, No. 4 Georgetown (3rd place), No. 11 St. Mary’s and No. 1 College of Charleston (tied for 4th). Defending champion, No. 9 Harvard is 13th out of 18 teams.

Seniors Augusta Nadler (Tabor Academy/Marion, Mass.) and Molly Lawson (Noble & Greenough School/Duxbury, Mass.) dominated the six races run in the A Division. The tandem finished no worse than seventh, placing in the top three five times. With 18 points, Nadler-Lawson are 12 points better than second place Charleston.

In four races in the B Division, junior Kate Brush (Champlain Valley Union/Hinesburg, Vt.) and sophomore Kate Wilson (Prout School/Hope Valley, R.I.) are in 10th place with 40 points. Boston College leads the B Division with 11 points.

Racing continues today and concludes on May 26 with the crowning of the national champion. The regatta is scheduled for 18 races in both A and B divisions.
