September27, 2006
KINGS POINT, N.Y.—Hobart senior John Keating (Mainline/Linwood, N.J.) finished third for the sailing team last weekend at the Laser North Regatta hosted by Merchant Marine. Keating finished the 15-race regatta with 71 points, one more than teammate John Moulthrop (Hotchkiss School/Middlebury, Conn.), who came in fourth in the 19-man race.
With the finish, Keating qualified for the Carl Van Duyne Trophy-Mid Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association Men’s Singlehanded Championship, which will take place on Oct. 7-8 at the Naval Academy.
Statesmen Dan Thompson (Mounds View/North Oaks, Minn.) (144 points) and Mark du Moulin (Mamaroneck/Larchmont, N.Y.) (208) finished 11th and 15th, respectively.
Keating is the third Statesman to qualify for the Van Duyne Trophy regatta, joining sophomore Rob Crane (Holderness School/Darien, Conn.) and senior Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.).
The HWS sailing team also competed in the Rochester Open last weekend. The Colleges won the regatta by a wide margin, capturing 24 of the weekend’s 32 races.
The sailing team will be back in action on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Coast Guard for the Danmark Trophy, and will also host the Fall North No. 1 Regatta that weekend.
