Heron sailors qualify for nationals

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart and William Smith sailing team competed in four events over the weekend, including the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Women’s Championship, in which the Herons finished fourth and qualified for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women’s National Championship. This is the seventh year in a row HWS will be represented at this event.

Sailing in the A division at the MAISA Women’s Championship in Ithaca, N.Y., was senior Kate Brush (Champlain Valley Union/Hinesburg, Vt.) and first-year Meghan Jordan (Clarence Central/East Amherst, N.Y.). They placed fifth in their division with 66 points, finishing in the top five in 11 of the 15 races. Competing for William Smith in the B division were seniors Lauren Anderson (New Canaan/New Canaan, Conn.) and Mandi Markee (Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.). The two sailed to a third place finish, recording top-four finishes in all 15 races for 39 points. The team placed fourth overall out of nine teams. St. Mary’s, Georgetown, Navy, and Old Dominion all qualified for nationals as well.

In action at the MAISA Open in Washington, D.C., was first-year Ned Turney (New Trier/Winnetka, Ill.) and junior Hunter Farris (Trinity/Lakewood, Ohio) in the A division, and first-year Jonathan Bernbaum (St. Georges School/Pine Beach, N.J.) and senior Nate Owen (Upper Arlington/Columbus, Ohio) in the B division. Both teams placed third in their divisions, collecting 35 and 36 points, respectively, and took third place overall out of 16 teams.

Representing HWS at the Thompson Trophy in New London, Conn., was junior Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.), and sophomores Kaitlyn Van Nostrand (Marine Academy/Allenwood, N.J.), Austin Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.), and Morgan Commette (St. Thomas Aquinas/Fort Lauderdale, Fla.). Mills and Van Nostrand teamed up to place 10th out of 18 in the A division with 149 points, while Kana and Commette raced in the B division, coming in 11th with 155 points. Both competed in 15 races, and combined for a 10th place finish overall.

In Boston, senior John Keating (Mainline/Linwood, N.J.) and first-years John Moulthrop (Hotchkiss School/Middlebury, Conn.), Maria Trainor (Dover Sherborn/Sherborn, Mass.), and Emily Pelo (Scituate/Scituate, Mass.) sailed at the George Morris Regatta. HWS placed 13th out of 18 teams. Moulthrop and Trainor raced in the A division, placing 10th (100 points, while Keating and Pelo took 15th (115).

HWS, ranked second in the nation, will be back on the water on April 28-29 when it competes for the America Trophy at Merchant Marine.
