GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College senior Mandi Markee (Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) and first-year Maria Trainor (Dover-Sherborn/Sherborn, Mass.) were recognized at the Annual William Smith Athletics Awards Banquet on May 1. The Ady Symonds ’96 Most Valuable Sailing Award went to Markee, while Trainor was presented with the Christine Jurczak ’00 Sailing Coach’s Award.
An All-American in 2005 with hopes of repeating this year, Markee was a starting crew for both the 2005 ICSA Team Race and Dinghy National Championship teams. In 2006, she was a starter on the HWS sailing team that finished third in the team race national championship. Markee, a captain, will compete for three more national titles before her collegiate sailing career is complete. She will race in the Coed Dinghy, Women’s, and Team Race National Championships at the end of May. Markee also was honored with William Smith’s Evaleen C. Harrison ’19 Scholar-Athlete Award.
One of the top rookies on the team, Trainor helped the team to an eighth-place finish at the Boston Dinghy Cup, and a third-place finish at the Moody Trophy. Trainor sailed to a win in the B division of the Moody Trophy with a regatta-low score of 35.
