Sailing takes 3rd at Moody, Admiral’s Cup

April 16, 2007

The second-ranked Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team posted solid finishes in both the Admiral’s Cup Regatta and the Moody Trophy Regatta over the weekend. The sailors placed third out of 20 teams in the Admiral’s Cup held at Merchant Marine, and took third out of 15 at the Moody Trophy hosted by Rhode Island. Yale and St. Mary’s took first and second place, respectively, at King’s Point, while URI and Boston College were the top two teams in Rhode Island.

Seniors Trevor Moore (Woodstock Union/Pomfret, Vt.) and Mandi Markee (Torrey Pines/Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) posted a low score of 69 points to win the A division at the Admiral’s Cup. They finished in the top six in nine of their 13 races. Racing in the B division was senior Brian Clancy (Boston College/Scituate, Mass.), sophomore Sarah Borup (Toms River South/Pine Beach, N.J.), and junior Bill Healy (Newark/Newark, N.Y.). They finished in eighth place with 122 points after sailing in 13 races. Sophomore Rob Crane (Holderness School/Darien, Conn.) came in fifth in the C division, totaling 78 points and winning five of his 13 races.

In Rhode Island, junior Jay Mills (Hotchkiss School/Greenport, N.Y.) and sophomore Kaitlyn Van Nostrand (Marine Academy/Allenwood, N.J.) took fourth in the A division with 45 points, while sophomore Austin Kana (Gunston School/Easton, Md.) and first-year Maria Trainor (Dover-Sherborn/Sherborn, Mass.) won the B division with 35 points. Both HWS teams competed in seven races.

HWS also sent representatives to the North Spring No. 2 Regatta in Ithaca over the weekend. Senior Kate Brush (Champlain Valley Union/Hinesburg, Vt.) and first-year Meghan Jordan (Clarence Central/East Amherst, N.Y.) sailed to a third-place finish in the A division, totaling 52 points and eight top-four finishes out of 12 races. In the B division, senior Lauren Anderson (New Canaan/New Canaan, Conn.) and first-year Molly Pribor (Morristown-Beard School/Madison, N.J.) came in fourth with 62 points. The combination of the Herons’ scores put them fourth overall out of 17 teams.

The sailors will be back in action on April 21-22 when they travel to the Thompson Trophy at Connecticut College, the MAISA Open at Georgetown, and the MAISA Women’s Championships hosted at Cornell.
